While on a mission to decontaminate the plague-ridden world of Ariannus, the U.S.S. Enterprise intercepts a stolen Federation shuttlecraft. Its sole occupant, a humanoid named Lokai, beams aboard and requests that Captain Kirk grant him asylum on the Enterprise. Lokai is from the planet Cheron, and his appearance is extremely unusual: he is literally half-black and half-white, a line separating the hues straight down the centre of his body. After the bridge crew detect another vessel in pursuit of the Enterprise, the craft's pilot beams on board; the man is named Bele, and is also from Cheron; however, the difference is that Bele's black and white skin is the exact opposite of Lokai's. Bele claims to be Cheron's chief officer, and has been sent out to bring in a political traitor: Lokai. During their stay aboard Kirk's ship, the two Cheron's are constantly at each other's throats, and it is obvious that each finds the appearance of the other to be utterly intolerable. Kirk soon tires of their bigotry, and decides to ignore his two 'guests' so that he can carry out his original mission on Ariannus. However, Bele then hijacks the Enterprise so that he can take Lokai back to Cheron for punishment...
